A Perth fundraising event is set to support the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) Rachel House and outreach efforts in Gaza. The Charity St John Scotland Perth and Kinross will host an illustrated talk about Scotland’s Sword of State on Sunday, October 27. The presentation will be conducted by Mark Dennis, the limner to the priory of the order of St John in Scotland. The talk will explore the history of the ceremonial Sword of State and the creation of the new Elizabeth Sword, named after the late Queen Elizabeth II. Dennis was personally entrusted with designing and overseeing the production of this special sword, which features a scabbard made from Perthshire oak and was formally presented to King Charles III in July 2023.
The event, commissioned with the support of the Scottish Government on the initiative of the Lord Lyon King of Arms, Scotland’s chief heraldic officer, aims to raise funds for St John Scotland. These proceeds will contribute towards acquiring a vital piece of equipment for the Eye Hospital outreach work in Gaza, which is a mobile retinal laser unit used to prevent diabetes-induced retinopathy, a significant cause of blindness in Gaza’s population where diabetes rates are particularly high.
CHAS CEO Rami Okasha expressed gratitude to St John Scotland Perth and Kinross for hosting the insightful talk about the history of Scotland’s Sword of State and for donating a portion of the event’s proceeds to CHAS. The raised funds will support CHAS in its continued efforts to assist children with life-shortening conditions and their families throughout Scotland. With an increasing demand for its services, CHAS is committed to providing unwavering care from the point of diagnosis all the way through bereavement.
The talk will take place at the Royal George Hotel from 2 pm to 4 pm. Attendees will be served tea, coffee, and shortbread. Ticket prices are £15, with a reduced rate of £7 for students. Additionally, there will be a prize draw for participants to enjoy.
