In a stunning turn of events, a 50p coin featuring the Atlantic Salmon alongside the King’s portrait has been confirmed by the Royal Mint as the rarest coin currently in circulation. This unique coin has surpassed the highly collectable 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, claiming the top spot after 15 years, according to the official maker of British coins.
The Royal Mint revealed that only 200,000 of the Atlantic Salmon 50p coins have been released to UK banks and post offices, making it even more scarce than the 2009 Kew Gardens coin, which had 10,000 more in circulation. This announcement coincided with the release of the 2023 mintage figures for UK coins in circulation.
Last year signified a significant shift for British coinage as it marked the final stage of King Charles’ appearance on UK coins. The redesigned coins, ranging from 1p to £2, commemorated the coronation and showcased the King’s dedication to conservation and the natural world, featuring wildlife such as dormice and bees.
The Royal Mint described the 50p coin as “the nation’s most collectable coin” due to its varied designs over the years, with over 100 different designs gracing its reverse side since its introduction. Out of the top 10 rarest 50p coins in circulation, six are related to the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, with additions like the Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny coins from 2018 also making the list.
Rebecca Morgan, the director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, expressed excitement over the reveal of the mintage figures, highlighting the Atlantic Salmon 50p as the rarest in circulation. She noted that the previous top contender, the Kew Gardens 50p, has been overtaken by the Atlantic Salmon coin. Morgan also pointed out the significant changes in the nation’s coinage with designs celebrating King Charles III’s coronation entering circulation.
Overall, the announcement of the Atlantic Salmon 50p as the rarest coin in circulation has caused a stir within the coin collecting community, offering a thrilling opportunity for collectors to find these special and unique designs in their everyday change.
