Ukraine strikes a Russian oil hub as Zelenskyy says the war is in ‘a very important phase’

Ukraine’s military has reported a striking development in the ongoing conflict with Russia, claiming to have targeted a major oil terminal in Crimea that supplies fuel for Russia’s war effort. The attack on the oil terminal in Feodosia, a strategic location on the south coast of the Russia-occupied Crimea Peninsula, comes at a crucial juncture in the conflict, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has evolved into a protracted battle of attrition with no clear end in sight. Both sides are grappling with the challenge of sustaining their military operations, with Ukraine intensifying its efforts to disrupt Russia’s military and economic capacity. In response to the strike on the oil terminal, Russian-installed authorities in Feodosia confirmed a fire at the facility but did not disclose the cause.

Ukraine’s military strategy has increasingly focused on targeting essential rear areas that support Russia’s military operations. By deploying long-range drones to attack oil depots, refineries, and armories, Ukraine aims to disrupt Russia’s ability to sustain its forces, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region, the focal point of Russian military activity. Kyiv is also seeking approval from its Western allies to use long-range weapons provided by them to target Russian territory, with a potential decision expected at an upcoming meeting of defense leaders in Germany.

President Zelenskyy underscored the critical phase of the conflict, emphasising the need to exert pressure on Russia to prevent further escalation. As Ukraine confronts larger Russian forces in the east and defends territory gained in the Kursk region, Zelenskyy reiterated the importance of strength in achieving peace. Amid the escalating tensions, Russia reportedly launched missiles and drones at Ukraine overnight, resulting in minor damage in Kyiv but no reported casualties.

The evolving dynamics of the conflict underscore the enduring challenges faced by both Ukraine and Russia as they seek to assert their military dominance. The war, now in its third year, continues to exact a toll on both sides as they manoeuvre to gain a strategic advantage in the protracted conflict. As developments unfold on the ground and diplomatic efforts intensify, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia remains a focal point of global attention, with implications that extend beyond the region.
