A father and daughter have accomplished the impressive feat of completing every Great Trail in the country to raise essential funds for Scottish Autism. Ian Alderman and his 10-year-old daughter Eve have successfully tackled all twenty-nine of Scotland’s Great Trails over nearly two years, covering a total of two thousand miles across the beautiful landscapes of Scotland. Their journey began in January 2023, with both Ian and Eve being autistic themselves, they have managed to raise close to £7,000 for Scottish Autism, which is the largest autism charity in Scotland. The funds raised continue to increase through their JustGiving page.
Eve, who started this fundraising journey when she was just eight years old and completed it at the age of ten, is believed to be the youngest individual to have conquered all of Scotland’s Great Trails. The duo shared their experiences and challenges throughout their adventure on their blog, named Our Spectrum Adventures. Their remarkable achievements were acknowledged and celebrated by Scottish Autism and NatureScot, the organization responsible for managing Scotland’s Great Trails. Subsequently, both Ian and Eve received certificates and appreciation from these institutions for their outstanding efforts.
Reflecting on the completion of this extraordinary challenge, Ian Alderman mentioned, “When Eve was a baby, the hospital discovered a tumour growing on her spine, and we were informed that she may not be able to come home. After Eve received the all-clear, we decided to live each day to the fullest and provide her with a memorable childhood filled with outdoor experiences.” Ian highlighted that the logistical aspect was the most significant challenge they faced during the journey, including factors like transportation, resupply options, accommodations, financing, scheduling commitments, social media updates, fundraising activities, and overcoming unforeseen obstacles.
Jane Kennedy, the Income Generation and Partnerships Lead at Scottish Autism, expressed her delight and gratitude towards Ian and Eve for the substantial funds raised during their remarkable journey. She commended their efforts in not only raising money to support autistic individuals but also in increasing awareness about autism and Scottish Autism’s work. The impact of their fundraising will contribute significantly to the continued provision of services for people with autism.
The heartwarming story of Ian and Eve’s dedication and passion for supporting individuals with autism serves as an inspiration to many. Their remarkable journey not only raised vital funds but also shed light on the importance of understanding and supporting individuals with autism in our communities. The resilience, determination, and spirit demonstrated by this father-daughter duo exemplify the power of compassion and positivity in making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
