A father’s warning about a subtle physical symptom turned out to be a devastating diagnosis of incurable brain cancer. Jack Carpenter, a 36-year-old personal trainer from Felixstowe, East Suffolk, experienced numbness in his fingers back in June. He also struggled with simple tasks like switching off a car or picking up a pen due to his brain not processing commands properly.
After undergoing a CT scan in August, Jack and his wife Emily received the devastating news that he had three tumours in his brain. The shock was so extreme that Jack passed out in his chair upon hearing the diagnosis. In September, he was diagnosed with grade three astrocytoma, an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer with a prognosis of three to five years.
Despite the grim prognosis, Jack remains determined to defy the odds. He will begin a course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment starting on October 21 in the hopes of improving his prognosis and reducing the size of his tumours. Jack, who owns an obstacle course racing training facility called Field Fit, has been focusing on his health and fitness to fight alongside his treatment.
The couple has two young daughters, Margot, aged three, and Elodie, aged one. They are grappling with the emotional toll of Jack’s diagnosis, especially as Emily lost her mother to cancer just before her 21st birthday. Jack’s physical fitness from years of being a personal trainer and athlete has surprised doctors, but he is now facing a battle against an illness he never anticipated.
