BBC to Release Pride & Prejudice ‘Follow-up’

The BBC has announced an upcoming spin-off to Jane Austen’s beloved classic, Pride and Prejudice. The new series, titled “The Other Bennet Sister,” will shift focus to Mary Bennet, the often-overlooked middle sister of Lizzy Bennet. The character of Mary has previously been portrayed by Lucy Briers in the 1995 TV adaptation and by Talulah Riley in the 2005 movie version. The series will delve into Mary’s story as she embarks on her own journey of love, leaving behind her family home in Meryton to explore London and the Lake District.

The 10-part series aims to showcase Mary’s unique personality, portraying her as awkward, anxious, and preachy, quite different from the typical period drama heroine. The official synopsis hints at Mary’s transformation as she decides to take charge of her own destiny, defying societal expectations. The show will be written by Sarah Quintrell, known for her work on “The Power,” and produced in collaboration with Bad Wolf, the team behind Doctor Who.

Quintrell expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m thrilled to be telling the story of Mary – the other Bennet sister – exploring what it is to come of age when you’re the odd one out.” The adaptation has found a home at the BBC, and Quintrell is eager to bring this fresh take on a beloved classic to the screen, particularly for all the ‘Marys’ out there who may resonate with the character’s journey.

While casting details are yet to be revealed, academics previously analysed the character of Mr Darcy in 2017. Professors John Sutherland and Amanda Vickery re-evaluated Darcy’s appearance based on the text, beauty standards of the time, and possible inspirations for Austen’s character. Contrary to popular portrayals, their research suggested Darcy would have had a powdered wig and a pale complexion with white and pink skin, challenging modern perceptions of the character.

As viewers anticipate the release of “The Other Bennet Sister,” this spin-off promises a refreshing take on a timeless classic, offering a deeper exploration of a character often overshadowed in Austen’s original work. Fans of Pride and Prejudice can look forward to a new perspective on Mary Bennet’s journey to self-discovery and love in this upcoming BBC series.
