An Edinburgh mother, currently on holiday in Florida, has shared chilling footage of a deserted Disney World during Hurricane Milton. The mother flew to Orlando from Manchester Airport on Wednesday amidst a mass evacuation in the US prior to the arrival of the destructive hurricane. Hurricane Milton has pounded Florida, bringing ten feet of water and 150mph winds, resulting in confirmed fatalities.
Authorities have advised people to stay indoors unless faced with a life-threatening situation as the storm hits the area. The hurricane has now been downgraded to a category one storm after making landfall. The Edinburgh mum shared eerie footage from her hotel room as well as Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Lodges where shops were seen with boarded-up windows in preparation for the storm.
Braving the storm at the popular tourist attraction, the mum, who goes by the handle @UnorganisedMummy on TikTok, described their experience with the hurricane, mentioning the preparations taken by businesses in anticipation of the severe weather conditions. The footage showed the impact of the storm with strong winds and flooding visible within the park. Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, with devastating maximum sustained winds of 120mph.
The US National Weather Service issued high flood warnings affecting over two million residents in the storm’s path. Blackouts caused by the destructive storm have left more than 2 million people without power. To ensure safety, airlines such as Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and Tui have cancelled flights between the UK and Florida. Several airports in Florida, including Orlando International, Melbourne Orlando International, and Tampa International, have halted commercial operations.
