The powerful winds exceeding 100mph pounded St. Petersburg, Florida, on Wednesday night, leading to the destruction of the stadium’s roof, which is made of Teflon-coated fiberglass.

The stadium was intended to serve as a base for 10,000 responders engaged in the clean-up efforts following Hurricane Milton. Built to withstand winds of up to 115mph, the stadium’s roof was supported by 180 miles of cables connected by struts. Despite the construction, storm chaser and journalist Jonathan Petramala, who filmed the damage using a drone, expressed that the stadium “had no chance” against the forces of Hurricane Milton.
The Tampa Bay Rays had recently completed their season at the Tropicana Field. However, due to the lack of a drainage system on the field, games cannot be held without a roof, as reported by the Tampa Bay Times. The team had plans for a new $1.3 billion stadium in St. Petersburg, but the completion is not expected until at least 2028.
