In Wrexham, the ‘Rob and Ryan effect’ goes beyond the soccer club as tourism and investments grow

In Wrexham, the ‘Rob and Ryan effect’ is boosting tourism and investments across the town, extending beyond just the soccer club. Nestor Aguedelo, an engineer from Bogota, Colombia, found himself in The Turf, a pub in Wrexham, drawn by a TV documentary showcasing the city. This trend is mirrored by visitors from around the world, such as Linda Williams from Canada, who now associate Wrexham with Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The influx of tourists has significantly impacted Wrexham’s economy, with tourism revenue reaching £180 million in 2023. The town is seeing a surge in investments and business activities, with American food manufacturer Kellogg’s planning to establish Europe’s largest cereal factory in Wrexham. Boutique hotels are emerging, and more Americans are investing in property in the area for short-term rentals.

Wrexham’s local businesses, like Wrexham Lager, are capitalizing on the newfound attention from the TV series, expanding internationally to countries like Scandinavia, Australia, Canada, and the U.S. The town is positioned for further growth, aiming to become the U.K. City of Culture in 2029.

The soccer club’s success under Reynolds and McElhenney’s ownership has rejuvenated local spirits. Plans include redevelopment of the Kop stand at the Racecourse, hosting international matches, and the opening of a Football Museum for Wales. Moreover, the duo is actively involved in supporting community initiatives, such as the Wrexham Miners Project, preserving the city’s heritage.

Despite initial skepticism, the duo was granted the freedom of Wrexham in 2022, signifying widespread acceptance and appreciation from the locals. The energy brought by Reynolds and McElhenney seems to have revitalized Wrexham, instilling a sense of pride and positivity in the town. The ‘Rob and Ryan effect’ is truly reshaping Wrexham’s future, making it a vibrant and thriving destination.
