Scottish prisons are facing severe overcrowding issues, as highlighted by Deputy First Minister John Swinney. Swinney has raised concerns about the safety of prison staff and inmates due to the overcrowded conditions in some jails across the country. The SNP Government is considering releasing more prisoners early to alleviate this problem.
Currently, over 8,300 prisoners are incarcerated in Scotland, with many of them housed in aging facilities like HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, which is set to close by 2027. Swinney’s warnings come as Justice Secretary Angela Constance is expected to announce an expansion of the early release programme. A previous initiative saw 477 convicts released early this summer to tackle overcrowding in prisons.
Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay has expressed worries about potentially releasing dangerous criminals through the early release scheme. He raised concerns that offenders such as killers, rapists, domestic abusers, drug dealers, and child abusers could be freed prematurely. Findlay criticised the SNP Government, attributing the current state of Scotland’s prisons to their actions over the past 17 years.
In response, Swinney refuted Findlay’s claims, calling them “patently untrue” and “complete nonsense.” He pointed out that the average length of prison sentences has increased by 32% in the last decade, demonstrating the government’s commitment to upholding justice. Swinney stressed that the safety and well-being of both prison staff and inmates are of utmost importance.
The First Minister highlighted the challenges posed by the rising prison population, calling for sustainable and effective solutions to address overcrowding. Swinney emphasised the government’s obligation to maintain a stable and safe prison system while acknowledging the significant congestion within prisons.
As discussions continue on early release programmes and prison overcrowding, the Scottish Government faces the task of balancing public safety with the need to address the challenges within the prison system. With the issue of overcrowding looming large, officials are under pressure to find viable solutions that ensure the welfare of both prison staff and inmates across Scotland.
