Kirkcudbright Young Authors Project Receives £500 Funding Boost
The Galloway Association of Glasgow has shown support for the Kirkcudbright Book Week initiative by granting £500. The project, scheduled from March 3-9 next year, aims to nurture young authors in Kirkcudbright. This funding from the association marks the second time they have contributed to this joint effort between Kirkcudbright Book Week Society, Kirkcudbright Academy, and author Hugh McMillan along with his team of writers.
Angus Rex, the president of the Galloway Association of Glasgow, expressed his delight in providing further funding for this inspiring project. He emphasized the importance of empowering young Gallovidians to share their thoughts and experiences creatively in today’s rapidly changing world. Hugh McMillan, the lead tutor, thanked the association for supporting the young poets in Kirkcudbright, highlighting the significance of creativity in personal growth.
The funding will enable the project to continue for another year, facilitating workshops where students can produce and publish their work. Over the first two years, creative writing sessions were conducted, focusing on the spoken word, Scots language, and producing annual anthologies of poetry and prose. The upcoming year will involve more authors, including specialists in spoken word and young writers.
In addition to fostering creativity, the project aims to develop organizational skills among students, enhancing their CVs and personal statements for future opportunities. The financial support from the Galloway Association of Glasgow, alongside contributions from the Holywood Trust and the National Lottery Community Fund, ensures the continuity of this initiative.
Moreover, the association is known for its charitable endeavors within Galloway, supporting various causes including the arts and education. The project’s success in the past years has led to the decision to expand it further, with plans for a day-long literary festival organized by the students themselves at the academy. This initiative not only encourages artistic expression but also promotes valuable skills for the students’ future endeavours.
