Middle East latest: At least 27 killed as Israeli strike hits a school in Gaza

At least 27 people were killed in Gaza as an Israeli strike targeted a school used as a shelter for displaced individuals. Palestinian officials reported that among the casualties were a child and seven women. The strike occurred amid Israel’s ongoing attacks on what they claim are militant targets throughout Gaza.

In southern Lebanon, the U.N. peacekeeping force stated that an Israeli tank had fired on its headquarters in Naqoura, injuring two peacekeepers who were subsequently taken to the hospital. The force condemned the deliberate gunfire directed at its positions by Israeli forces in recent days.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, as well as its ally Hezbollah in Lebanon, has resulted in significant casualties and destruction. Palestinian health authorities have reported over 42,000 deaths in Gaza, with a majority being women and children. The war has displaced approximately 90% of Gaza’s population, causing widespread devastation.

The escalation of violence has led to international involvement, with Italy summoning the Israeli Ambassador to discuss the strike on a U.N. peacekeeping base where Italian personnel operate. The U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, has also been a target of Israeli attacks, resulting in injuries to peacekeepers.

Efforts to evacuate citizens from affected areas are underway, with Turkey assisting in the evacuation of over 2,000 Turkish nationals and other foreign individuals from Lebanon. The Turkish government has deployed a convoy of ships carrying humanitarian aid and is prepared for further evacuations if necessary.

Amidst the ongoing conflict, a top U.N. official in Lebanon has reiterated the call for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and allow diplomatic solutions to take hold. The U.N. coordinator stressed the importance of implementing resolutions aimed at disarming armed groups and restoring peace in the region.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense, with calls for de-escalation and diplomatic interventions to prevent further loss of life and destruction. The international community continues to monitor the developments closely as efforts to bring about peace and stability in the region persist.
