Pumpkin Spice Latte and Mulled Wine among autumn drinks which could damage your teeth

Dentists are raising concerns about the potential harm to teeth from popular autumnal drinks. As the season of Halloween costumes and bonfires approaches, shops are filling their shelves with seasonal beverages. Dr. Zaeem Jafri, from dental products firm Ordo, highlights the worst drinks for dental health.

One of the culprits is the Pumpkin Spiced Latte, a beloved seasonal favourite that can contain up to 50g of sugar, double the recommended daily intake. The high sugar content leads to the production of harmful acids that weaken tooth enamel, increasing the risk of tooth decay. While indulging in this treat occasionally is fine, making it a daily habit can have negative effects.

Mulled Wine is another popular choice during the colder months, but it can cause tooth staining and dry out the mouth. The alcohol in mulled wine reduces saliva production, which is crucial for rinsing away bacteria that adhere to teeth. Enjoying mulled wine as an occasional treat and following up with water to rinse the mouth is recommended.

With the dropping temperatures, many turn to extra-hot coffee to stay warm, but consuming drinks at very high temperatures can be harmful. Drinking extremely hot beverages, especially in cold weather, can cause cracks in tooth enamel, leading to heightened sensitivity and pain if not managed properly.

Toffee-flavoured drinks like toffee lattes or buttered toffee cocktails are popular choices during autumn. However, the sticky texture of toffee can stick to teeth, fostering a build-up of bacteria that may result in tooth decay, gum issues, or even tooth loss. Rinsing the mouth with water and regular flossing after consuming toffee treats can help prevent damage.

As the season transitions, being mindful of the impact of these autumnal drinks on dental health is crucial. Practising moderation, maintaining good oral hygiene habits, and being aware of the hidden dangers in seemingly innocuous beverages can go a long way in preserving a healthy smile throughout the season.
