Roofers dump huge pile of old tiles outside pensioner’s front door after he paid thousands for work
An 88-year-old pensioner, Robert Rowlands, from Pentrebane in Wales, was invoiced £6,500 by Apex Roofing Repairs Ltd to replace the roof tiles at his house. However, instead of bringing a skip to clear away the old tiles, the workers decided to dump them outside his house, obstructing his driveway. The family has been requesting the company to remove the mess “most days,” with assurances that it will be handled promptly. Despite promises that the debris would be cleared the same day or the next, the pile of rubble remains nearly a month later, as reported by the Mirror.
Mr. Rowlands expressed his frustration, saying, “It’s been about three weeks now I’ve been waiting for it to be moved. In the beginning, I believed them but it never came to fruition. I want to get that lot cleared – it’s driving me around the twist.” A concerned relative, choosing to remain anonymous, stated, “They should have had a skip and removed it, not dumped it there. [Mr. Rowlands] has had a number of falls and three mini-strokes in the last year. He uses a walking frame and doesn’t go out very often. He is getting very angry and worked up about this, and we’re really worried now.”
The family was forced to create a pathway through the waste as a section of the driveway was blocked, while another cleared section was too steep for Mr. Rowlands to navigate safely. When Wales Online reached out to Apex Roofing for a statement, a representative confirmed over the phone that they did not use a skip and were awaiting a time slot for a third party to collect the debris. They also claimed that it was Apex, not the family, who cleared the path.
The frustrating situation highlights the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals like Mr. Rowlands when dealing with irresponsible waste disposal practices. The lack of consideration shown by the roofing company has not only inconvenienced the elderly homeowner but also put his safety at risk. It is essential for companies to uphold their duty of care to clients, especially those who may be more vulnerable or require additional support. Hopefully, this issue will be resolved swiftly to alleviate the stress and concerns faced by Mr. Rowlands and his family.
