Authorities in eastern Tennessee are currently investigating a container believed to contain substantial amounts of dynamite, with residents warned that evacuations are likely to remain in effect through the night as officials strive to ascertain the exact contents of the container. Officials have emphasised the importance of residents staying out of the area until further notice, considering the situation as precarious.
Scott Erland, spokesperson for the Knoxville Police Department, addressed reporters on Friday, stating, “Until we know more, we implore people to stay out of this area. We’re still dealing with a volatile situation.” The situation arose after an employee found a 5×5 foot steel box suspected to contain dynamite at CMC Recycling, a facility offering metal recycling services to both residents and industrial clients. The employee reportedly initiated smoking from the box while attempting to open it with a torch, leading to authorities being contacted. There is uncertainty regarding the exact contents of the container.
Erland indicated, “Until we believe otherwise, we’re going to treat it like it’s going to explode.” Law enforcement has found no signs of foul play or indication that the box was left at the site maliciously. The duration the box had been at CMC Recycling remains unknown, though officials speculate it had been present for several days. The Knoxville Police Department collaborated with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who recommended the immediate evacuation of the surrounding area.
Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon reported that over 30 individuals sought refuge in an emergency shelter on Thursday night. The shelter shall continue operating as inquiries persist. An excess of 1,000 residents have voluntarily evacuated the vicinity, according to Erland. The investigation into the container continues, with the situation being monitored closely by the authorities.
