Nadia Almada, the first transgender winner of Big Brother, has bravely spoken out about how the show “broke her” and criticised producers for airing “transgressive comments” made by a current contestant. Nadia rose to fame after winning the fifth season of the show in 2004 with an impressive 74% of the vote.
However, her experience took a turn for the worse when she returned for the all-stars version of the show in 2010. Nadia described this time as being a “victim of a very produced series” and shared that it was a distressing and heartbreaking period for her. She felt that the producers didn’t protect her from the transphobic treatment she received from her fellow housemate, the late rapper Coolio, which left her feeling broken.
Speaking on the Queerphoria podcast, Nadia expressed how she was mentally impacted by the hostile environment created by the show’s producers and highlighted that she was put in harm’s way. She described the experience as dehumanising and shared that it took her to a dark place, particularly due to the treatment she endured from a specific person.
Recently, Nadia raised concerns about the current series of Big Brother, specifically pointing out the “transgressive comments” made by one of the housemates, Ryan Bradshaw. In his introduction VT, Ryan ridiculed the idea of “woke people” using “certain pronouns,” which sparked criticism from Nadia and other public figures.
Nadia took to her Instagram story to express disappointment in the show’s editorial decision to air Ryan’s comments, stating that it was done for publicity and to generate outrage for clicks and views. She called out Big Brother for failing to educate Ryan on such matters and expressed her dismay at the lack of progress in society regarding acceptance and inclusivity.
Trans TV presenter India Willoughby also weighed in on the issue, condemning the comments made by Ryan and questioning if such derogatory remarks towards other communities would be tolerated. The incident has shed light on the importance of promoting respect and inclusion in reality TV shows.
A spokesperson for Big Brother responded by stating that housemates receive training on respect and inclusion, as well as extensive briefings on expected behaviour and language within the house. This incident has sparked a conversation about the treatment of LGBTQIA+ individuals in media and the responsibility of TV shows in promoting a more inclusive and accepting environment.
