Climate change gave significant boost to Milton’s destructive rain, winds, scientists say

Climate change has been identified by scientists as a significant factor in intensifying the destructive forces of Hurricane Milton, resulting in increased rainfall and strengthened winds. According to a recent rapid study, human-induced climate change was responsible for boosting Hurricane Milton’s rainfall by 20 to 30% and increasing its wind speeds by approximately 10%.

This analysis comes on the heels of Hurricane Helene, which wreaked havoc on the southeastern United States just two weeks prior, also exacerbated by climate change. Researchers at World Weather Attribution (WWA) revealed that without the influence of climate change, Hurricane Milton would have made landfall as a weaker Category 2 storm, rather than the more severe Category 3 storm it became.

Despite not being peer-reviewed, WWA’s rapid studies employ peer-reviewed methods to compare weather events with historical data from a world that has not experienced significant warming. By examining weather observations data, the scientists were able to determine the impact of climate change on Hurricane Milton, corroborating findings from previous studies that show a substantial increase in hurricane intensity and likelihood due to climate change.

The aftermath of Hurricane Milton saw at least eight fatalities and widespread damage, with flooded roadways and numerous tornadoes causing chaos along coastal regions. Millions of customers were left without power in the storm’s wake, underscoring the far-reaching consequences of extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change.

Milton made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane near Siesta Key in Florida, propelled by unusually warm waters near record levels. Climate scientist Michael Mann concurred with the assessment that climate change played a significant role in exacerbating the storm, suggesting that the study may have underestimated the actual impact of climate change on Hurricane Milton.

Furthermore, an analysis by Climate Central highlighted the role of climate change in elevating sea surface temperatures, making extreme weather events like Hurricane Milton more likely. The organization reported that water temperatures during the storm were up to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average for the period between 1991 and 2020.

In tandem with Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton propelled what had been a relatively quiet hurricane season into a period of heightened activity, underscoring the urgency of addressing climate change and its implications for extreme weather events. The increased frequency and severity of hurricanes serve as a stark reminder of the pressing need for concerted global efforts to mitigate and adapt to the impact of climate change.
