Alex Salmond’s body is set to be repatriated to Scotland on a private flight, following his untimely passing in North Macedonia from a heart attack over the weekend. The former Scottish First Minister was in the country attending a conference when the tragic event occurred.
There were calls by Tory MP Sir David Davis for the RAF to be used to bring Mr. Salmond’s body back from the city of Ohrid. However, discussions between the Scottish and UK governments led to the decision that a private flight would be chartered and paid for by an individual, who has chosen to remain anonymous, to ensure Mr. Salmond’s return to Scotland.
According to the PA news agency, the cost of repatriating a body typically ranges from £2,500 to £20,000, as estimated by Homeland International, a body-repatriation service. Kenny MacAskill, acting leader of the Alba Party that Mr. Salmond led until his passing, expressed the family’s gratitude for the support received to bring Alex Salmond’s body back home.
Mr. MacAskill also acknowledged the North Macedonian government for expediting the process of releasing the body and thanked both the Scottish and UK governments for facilitating the repatriation. He shared that the family will soon announce details regarding funeral arrangements and a memorial service to honour Alex Salmond’s life.
Tributes were paid to the former SNP leader in the House of Commons, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and other party leaders recognising Mr. Salmond’s significant impact on Scottish and UK politics. Rishi Sunak, leader of the Tories, and Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, also paid their respects to the late politician.
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time, while arrangements are made to lay Mr. Salmond to rest and celebrate his life. Alex Salmond’s legacy continues to be remembered and honoured by many across the political spectrum as he is brought back to his homeland for the final time.
