A recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has highlighted a significant correlation between helmet use on motorcycles and the likelihood of survival in fatal crashes. The Institute, advocating for stricter state road safety laws, has compiled data from decades of motorcycle accidents, revealing compelling insights.
According to the study, an estimated 20,000 motorcyclists who lost their lives in crashes in the U.S. since the mid-1970s could have survived if stronger helmet laws had been in place. This figure, as reported by the nonprofit group aiming to reduce harm from motor vehicle crashes, represents a substantial portion of rider fatalities over the years.
The research suggests that if all states had mandated helmet use for all riders from 1976 to 2022, approximately 22,058 lives could have been saved. Currently, only 17 states along with the District of Columbia have implemented such laws. The study further notes that more than 6,000 motorcyclists lost their lives in both 2021 and 2022, indicating a pressing need for improved safety measures.
The IIHS underlines that the implementation of all-rider helmet laws could potentially reduce the death toll by up to 10%. Eric Teoh, the director of statistical services at IIHS and the author of the paper, emphasised the possible impact of such legislation, stating that it could save hundreds of lives annually. He stressed, “Those aren’t just numbers. They’re friends, parents, and children.”
Despite an overall increase in helmet use in regions with and without mandatory laws, states with such regulations consistently exhibited higher usage rates throughout the study period. The findings imply that while enforcing helmet laws might be met with resistance from some motorcyclists, the potential benefits in terms of lives saved are substantial.
