A man referred to as a “family man” launched a glass bottle at a stranger after ordering 20 bottles of beer in a Manchester pub. Martin Bowker had reserved a table to watch the Croatia v Brazil World Cup Quarter Final on December 9, 2022. The pub owner had pre-ordered over 20 bottles of lager and a bottle of vodka for Bowker’s table. However, after consuming some drinks, the 46-year-old threw a gin bottle at another patron in the bar on Deansgate.
The victim, who was out with his fiancée and friends after a day at the Christmas markets, was struck by the bottles, sustaining injuries. CCTV footage presented in court captured the altercation before Bowker was removed by the doorman. Medics later confirmed that the victim had suffered a “soft tissue injury” and a “hairline fracture” to his nose as a result of the incident. In a statement read in court, the victim expressed the pain and trauma he experienced, questioning why he was targeted with the bottle.
Bowker, who had no prior relevant convictions, admitted guilt to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and affray. The court heard that the case faced delays in police and CPS investigations, leading to a lengthy process before sentencing. Judge Patrick Field KC condemned Bowker’s actions as unprovoked, violent, and dangerous. He sentenced Bowker to six months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, and ordered him to pay £700 in victim compensation along with a £150 surcharge.
Despite Bowker showing remorse and seeking counselling since the incident, the court highlighted the severity of his actions that left the victim injured and traumatised. The victim’s statement revealed the impact on his physical appearance and emotional well-being following the attack. The incident serves as a reminder of the consequences of reckless and violent behaviour in public spaces.
In a display of public safety, the court’s decision to hold Bowker accountable for his actions sends a message that such behaviour will not be tolerated in society. The victim’s account of the incident sheds light on the lasting effects of such violent encounters and highlights the importance of responsible and respectful conduct in social settings.
