A 15-year-old girl was diagnosed with cancer after developing an “unbearable” itch that was initially mistaken for an allergic reaction. Deborah Connell, 48, and her husband Brian, 65, legal guardians for their 15-year-old granddaughter Niamh, initially believed the constant itch all over Niamh’s body was related to an allergy or intolerance. Niamh’s GP suggested keeping a diary for her food and beauty products to identify the cause of the itch.
However, the itching became unbearable, preventing Niamh from sleeping, and she started to claw at her skin. When a lump appeared overnight in her neck, the family rushed her to A&E. Subsequent CT scans, biopsy, and ultrasound in August led to Niamh’s diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma – a cancer of the lymphatic system. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy to treat the cancer.
Niamh’s aunt Mhaired, Brian’s daughter, tragically passed away on September 10 due to mental health and alcohol struggles, compounding the family’s hardship. In support of Niamh and in memory of Mhaired, Deborah and Brian launched a GoFundMe page and shaved their heads for ‘Brave the Shave’ to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Deborah described Niamh as a vibrant girl who is struggling with the changes in her appearance due to chemotherapy. Despite missing school and her friends, Niamh has shown resilience and strength throughout the treatment. Deborah emphasised that Niamh will overcome this challenging period and return to her life full of vigour and enthusiasm.
The family has been coping with these difficulties while also being legal guardians to five children, including Casey, Niamh, and Jacob. The couple’s dedication to the children is unwavering, with Deborah expressing deep love and commitment to their well-being. The family has banded together in support, demonstrating immense strength and unity in the face of adversity.
Inspired by the care Niamh received at the hospital, Deborah and Brian initiated a fundraising campaign to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust. They shaved their heads in solidarity with Niamh’s experience, garnering overwhelming support and donations. The family’s primary focus remains on Niamh’s recovery and ensuring she leads a happy and healthy life post-treatment.
Reflecting on their journey, Deborah encouraged others to trust their instincts and seek medical attention for any concerns about their health. She reiterated the importance of cherishing life, dancing to the tune of happiness, and making the most of every moment. The family is determined to support Niamh wholeheartedly and help her reclaim her vibrant spirit as she continues her fight against cancer.
