Inside Sara Sharif’s tragic life as schoolgirl was ‘punished’ with ‘awful constellation of injuries’

Inside Sara Sharif’s tragic life as a schoolgirl, she was ‘punished’ with an ‘awful constellation of injuries’, a heart-wrenching tale that has unfolded at the Old Bailey. Sara Sharif, a 10-year-old girl, was found dead in her bunk bed at her family home in Woking, Surrey, on August 10, 2023. Police responded to a distress call from her father, Urfan Sharif, 42, who is now on trial along with Sara’s stepmother, Beinash Batool, 30, and her uncle, Faisal Malik, 29, charged with her murder.

During the ongoing trial, details of Sara’s harrowing final weeks have emerged. In a tearful call to emergency services, Urfan Sharif confessed to “legally punishing” his daughter, leading to her death. Sara was found lifeless in her bed with a note written by her father beside her, expressing his regret and fear before fleeing to Pakistan with Batool and Malik, leaving Sara’s body behind.

The court heard accounts from neighbours of concerning sounds emanating from the Sharif family home, with reports of screams, banging, and crying followed by an eerie silence. Witnesses described instances of violence and shouting, indicating a distressing environment for Sara. Despite neighbours’ interactions with Sharif, who seemed mindful of the noise, they had never observed any signs of abuse on Sara.

Medical examinations unveiled a catalogue of injuries on Sara’s body, indicating prolonged and severe abuse. She had multiple fractures, bite marks, and burn injuries, painting a grim picture of her suffering. The prosecutor emphasised that the extent of Sara’s injuries surpassed Sharif’s admission of beating her, implicating all three defendants in the sustained abuse Sara endured.

As the trial progresses, each defendant has denied responsibility, shifting blame onto others while pointing fingers at each other. Sara’s school, St Mary’s C of E Primary, mourned her loss, remembering her as a vibrant and opinionated student. The community is reeling from the tragedy as justice is sought for Sara’s untimely death.

The trial continues to unravel the torment Sara faced in her short life, shedding light on a heartbreaking tale of abuse and neglect within her own family. Sara’s memory lives on as her community seeks closure and justice for the innocent life lost.
