A determined and passionate individual recently completed a 47-mile ultra marathon from Glasgow to Edinburgh to raise funds for Monklands Light Opera (MLO). Gary Young, a valued member of MLO for nearly two years, undertook this challenging feat and successfully raised an impressive £1285 to support the group’s activities.
The Glasgow to Edinburgh ultra marathon saw Gary starting at Glasgow’s Riverside Museum and finishing at the Saughton Sports Complex, with the route following the country’s canals. Despite the arduous 10-hour, 16-minute journey, Gary was met with cheers and support from his MLO family as he crossed the finish line.
Reflecting on his experience, Gary shared, “I have been part of MLO for almost two years and wanted to do something to support this community group, which has been so welcoming and open to new members like myself.” Thanks to generous donations from friends, family, and club members, as well as a matching contribution of £1000 from his employer Barclays, Gary was able to raise a significant sum for MLO.
The funds raised will play a vital role in welcoming new members to MLO and supporting various initiatives within the group, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for individuals to participate in musical theatre both on and off the stage. MLO is gearing up for their next production, “Gypsy: A Musical Fable,” scheduled to take place on November 6-9 at Airdrie’s Ebenezer Congregational Church Hall.
