Furious parents have expressed outrage after a group of schoolgirls were sent home for wearing ‘incorrect’ skirts that were part of their school uniform. The incident occurred at Cottenham Village College in Cambridgeshire, where eleven pupils from different year groups were suspended and asked to go home on Monday for not adhering to the school’s uniform policy.
According to reports from Cambridgeshire Live, the students were gathered in a room and informed that they needed to change into the appropriate uniform items; failure to comply would result in being sent home. The school claimed to have clear expectations regarding uniforms and stated that they had various ways to communicate these requirements to both students and parents.
Parents, however, have criticised the school’s decision, noting that their children leave the house looking presentable and smart every morning. One parent, Diane Hurst, shared that her daughter, Alexandra, was sent home because her grey knee-length skirt was deemed to be made of the wrong fabric, despite wearing it since year seven. Another student, Amelia from year nine, was reprimanded for her skirt being rolled up, even though she demonstrated that it was not.
Chelsea, a year 11 pupil, was sent home for wearing a skirt that was the correct colour and length but made of the wrong material, as per her mother, Becky George. Concerns were raised about the impact of such incidents on the mental health and education of the students, with one parent emphasising that the school seemed to prioritise policies over the well-being of the children.
In response to the backlash, a spokesperson from Cottenham Village College stated that parents were given the opportunity to bring in the correct uniform items and that students who arrived at school inappropriately dressed were offered new uniform items to borrow. The school reiterated its firm stance on uniform policies, highlighting that families were encouraged to seek assistance if they faced difficulties in providing the required attire.
