Scots dad told ‘he’d be wasting doctor’s time’ before getting MND diagnosis

A Scottish father, Scott Stewart, aged 42, was given a devastating diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND) after being initially dismissed by a GP surgery when he raised concerns about twitching in his leg. The businessman, who enjoyed sports like golf and rugby, received the life-changing diagnosis 18 months after expressing initial symptoms in August 2022.

In March 2023, neurologists confirmed Mr. Stewart’s diagnosis of MND, a progressive nerve disorder, advising him to cherish life while he still could. Despite the challenges he faces, including now using a wheelchair, Mr. Stewart has found joy in becoming a first-time father and marrying his wife, Robyn, in December of the previous year.

Managing his golf equipment business from home in Stirling, Mr. Stewart is determined to spend quality time with his family, especially his baby daughter, Rae, before his condition advances further. He emphasises the need for improved awareness among medical professionals regarding the early indicators of MND to facilitate quicker diagnoses and interventions.

Expressing his frustration at the lack of progress in MND treatment over the past three decades, Mr. Stewart has actively participated in medical trials for potential MND medications. He advocates for increased funding and support for research initiatives, citing his involvement in a University of Aberdeen study on biomarkers as a positive step forward.

Despite facing a grim prognosis, Mr. Stewart has seized opportunities to experience memorable moments like attending prestigious golf events and meeting notable personalities. Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledges the impact of rugby legend Doddie Weir, who succumbed to MND in 2022 but left a lasting legacy through the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to advance research efforts.

Mr. Stewart’s advocacy for improved treatment options and enhanced support for MND patients resonates with the foundation’s mission to drive meaningful change in the landscape of MND care. Through his courage and determination, he strives to raise awareness, push for innovative solutions, and inspire others to join the fight against this debilitating condition.
