A grey seal named Ariel, who was discovered in a critical condition with a fishing line tightly wound around her neck, has been successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild. The rescue and recovery of Ariel took place at the SSPCA base in Fishcross, Clackmannanshire, after she was found in dire straits with the discarded fishing line causing severe injuries.
Ariel’s rescue story began when a Scottish SPCA officer found her almost decapitated by the fishing line on a beach in Johnshaven, Montrose. The line had caused deep wounds and heavy bleeding, putting Ariel’s life at risk. Upon arrival at the SSPCA’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre, staff immediately started providing her with the necessary care to nurse her back to health.
The dedicated team at the wildlife centre worked tirelessly to remove the fishing line, treat Ariel’s wounds with antibiotics, and ensure round-the-clock care to prevent further infections. Despite initially refusing to eat, Ariel gradually began to recover under the staff’s careful attention. After several months of intensive care, Ariel made a remarkable turnaround, regaining her health and reaching a weight of 56kg.
Caitlin Ganley, a Wildlife Assistant, described Ariel’s case as the most severe entanglement they had encountered, emphasizing the importance of responsible fishing practices to protect wildlife. After months of meticulous treatment and rehabilitation, Ariel was finally deemed fit for release, much to the delight of the team.
