Steve Borthwick insists England coaching changes have been ‘pretty seamless’

England’s rugby coach, Steve Borthwick, has downplayed the impact of recent coaching changes on the team, describing the transitions as “pretty seamless.” Despite departures in the coaching staff, Borthwick remains optimistic as England prepares to face New Zealand in their upcoming autumn matches.

The upheaval in the coaching team saw Felix Jones resign from his position overseeing the defence, creating a need for Joe El-Abd to step in temporarily while continuing his duties with Oyonnax. Additionally, Aled Walters, the head of strength and conditioning, also departed to join Ireland’s team. These changes prompted Borthwick to quickly find replacements to ensure continuity in team operations.

Speaking for the first time about the coaching reshuffle, Borthwick highlighted the consistency within the backroom staff, pointing to familiar faces like Richard Wigglesworth, Tom Harrison, Kevin Sinfield, and Andrew Strawbridge. Despite the adjustments, Borthwick expressed confidence in the abilities of Joe El-Abd, emphasizing their long-standing professional relationship.

Regarding the absence of key players like scrum-half Alex Mitchell, who is sidelined due to a neck injury, Borthwick remains focused on the immediate challenges at hand. Mitchell’s recovery progress is being closely monitored, with uncertainty looming over his availability for the upcoming Tests against top-tier rugby nations.

As England prepares for a demanding autumn schedule against formidable opponents like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and Japan, Borthwick faces decisions on player readiness and match strategies. The return of players like Henry Slade, George Ford, and Fraser Dingwall from injury offers a glimmer of hope for bolstering the team’s lineup.

With the coaching team adjustments settling in and player recoveries progressing, England under Borthwick’s leadership aims to navigate through the upcoming rugby battles with resilience and determination. The team’s preparations intensify as they gear up to face their rivals on the field, showcasing their unwavering commitment to achieving success in the challenging rugby landscape.
