Surgeons use technology to ‘see inside’ body for the first time in UK

Surgeons in the UK have successfully performed an operation using groundbreaking technology that allows them to ‘see inside’ a patient’s body for the first time ever in the country. The pioneering procedure took place at the Institute for Neurological Sciences in Glasgow, which is only the third centre worldwide to utilise mixed reality (MR) technology.

Operated by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), the Institute for Neurological Sciences specialises in providing advanced care for patients and welcomed this innovative approach to surgery. The first patient to undergo this revolutionary operation was 75-year-old grandmother Carol Toal, who was suffering from chronic pain in her leg and back due to spinal issues.

Mrs. Toal’s surgery aimed to correct a misalignment of her spine, address a spinal cyst, and decompress spinal nerves, which significantly improved her quality of life. She described the operation as “lifesaving” and within less than a week post-surgery, she no longer experienced chronic pain in her leg.

The procedure involved a system known as Spine Mixed Reality Navigation, which integrates intraoperative X-rays with external images of the patient. By relaying these images through MR goggles, surgeons are provided with a precise view of the body and spinal anatomy, enhancing the accuracy and minimally invasive nature of the surgery.

Consultant neurosurgeon Mohamed Abdelsadg highlighted the significance of this technology, stating, “This means the surgery is much more accurate, is much less invasive, and minimises surgical damage to other tissue.” The use of MR technology not only enhances the surgical process but also holds potential to further advance the advanced neurosurgical work at the Institute.

Following the successful operation, Mrs. Toal expressed her gratitude, saying, “My leg is much better and though I still have some pain in my back, I’m feeling really hopeful.” The director of regional services at NHSGGC, Susan Groom, commended the Institute for embracing innovative technologies that improve patient outcomes and thanked the team for their contributions during this ground-breaking trial.

This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone in the field of neurosurgery in the UK, positioning the Institute for Neurological Sciences as a pioneer in adopting cutting-edge technologies for the benefit of patients.
