A girls’ trip to New York State might commonly be associated with shopping, chi-chi cocktails, a Broadway show, and a flurry of selfies by iconic landmarks. However, the Big Apple is just one slice of New York State. Embarking on a road trip with my daughter Grace, we find ourselves far from the Manhattan Bridge, Statue of Liberty, or the quintessential yellow taxis.
This year marks the centenary of the New York State Parks system, created to provide access to open spaces, recreation, and connect people to its most celebrated lands. With over 350,000 acres of land, 35,000 acres of vineyards, and more than 2,000 waterfalls to explore, New York State offers a diverse range of experiences beyond the bustling metropolis of New York City.
We set out to explore some of New York State’s most awe-inspiring open spaces, offering adventurous holidaymakers a treasure trove of waterfalls, wine, wildlife, and natural beauty. As we embarked on our journey during autumn, the leaves were just beginning to turn to shades of yellow and orange, creating a picturesque setting for hiking, biking, and exploring the great outdoors.
Our first stop was Niagara Falls State Park, a 400-acre expanse that showcases the majestic power of the falls, which pour a staggering 685,000 gallons of water per second from the Great Lakes. Established in 1885, the park features iconic landmarks such as American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls, offering a mesmerising spectacle for visitors.
From thrilling boat rides to breathtaking viewing platforms, Niagara Falls State Park provides a range of experiences for tourists seeking to immerse themselves in nature’s grandeur. Beyond the tourist crowds, we discovered a quieter side of the park by exploring its tranquil paths and enjoying a sunrise vista of the falls from Goat Island.
Venturing southeast to the Finger Lakes region, we encountered a landscape shaped by glacial flows over two million years. The region boasts 11 lakes, picturesque towns, vineyards, and abundant wildlife, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking in Letchworth State Park, known as the ‘Grand Canyon of the East’, to exploring the gorges and waterfalls of Watkins Glen State Park, we found ourselves surrounded by natural beauty at every turn.
In addition to its natural wonders, the Finger Lakes region offers a vibrant culinary scene, with local wineries, cider orchards, and breweries showcasing the region’s agricultural bounty. Sampling wines overlooking vineyards and participating in outdoor activities such as stand-up paddleboard yoga on Canandaigua Lake provided a serene contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life.
As we concluded our journey through the hidden side of New York State, we left with a newfound appreciation for the diverse and captivating landscapes that lie beyond the iconic skyline of New York City. From the roaring waters of Niagara Falls to the serene beauty of the Finger Lakes, New York State offers a wealth of experiences for those willing to explore beyond the beaten path.
