A fighter jet with two people on board has crashed in Washington state during a training exercise, according to the US Navy. The incident involved an EA-18G Growler jet from the Electronic Attack Squadron and occurred east of Mount Rainier at around 3:23 p.m. on Tuesday. The Whidbey Island Naval Air Station reported the crash and initiated search operations to locate the crew members and investigate the crash site.
Search teams, including a US Navy MH-60S helicopter, were deployed from NAS Whidbey Island to assist in the search and rescue efforts. It is unclear at this point whether the crew managed to eject before the crash, and the cause of the incident is currently under investigation. The EA-18G Growler, equipped with advanced electronic warfare technology, is a similar aircraft to the F/A-18F Super Hornet and is primarily based at Whidbey Island, with one squadron stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.
The squadron involved in the crash, known as the “Zappers,” had recently been deployed on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the risks associated with military aircraft training exercises and deployments, which can sometimes result in accidents, injuries, or even fatalities. In a separate incident earlier this year, an F-35 fighter jet crashed in New Mexico after refuelling on its way to Edwards Air Force Base, resulting in serious injuries to the pilot.
Tragically, last year, eight US Air Force Special Operations Command service members lost their lives when the CV-22B Osprey aircraft they were aboard crashed off the coast of Japan. These incidents underscore the inherent dangers faced by military personnel during training and operational missions. The US Navy continues its search and rescue operations to locate the missing aviators and determine the circumstances surrounding the EA-18G Growler crash in Washington state.
