TNT and its sports platforms are set to showcase games from the new Unrivaled women’s 3-on-3 basketball league. The league recently announced a multi-year partnership with TNT to broadcast over 45 games from its inaugural season starting in January. Viewers can catch the action three nights a week, with games airing on TNT on Mondays and Fridays, and on truTV for Saturday matchups. The league is scheduled to kick off on January 17 in Miami.
Luis Silberwasser, Chairman & CEO of TNT Sports, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, “Our TNT Sports portfolio centres on premium live sports, and our partnership with Unrivaled underscores our commitment to expanding women’s sports programming and supporting the growth of women’s basketball.”
Led by co-founders Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, the league features 30 top women’s basketball players divided into six teams. Collier highlighted the significance of TNT’s support, especially in the inaugural year, as a testament to the growth of women’s basketball.
In a significant move, players in the Unrivaled league can expect six-figure salaries, addressing a key concern for athletes who often play overseas during the WNBA off-season to supplement their incomes. While the average WNBA salary sits around $130,000, top players can earn over $500,000 through various means. Additionally, players will have an equity stake in the league, further solidifying their investment in its success.
The league will span eight weeks, with teams playing two games per week on courts slightly smaller than WNBA standards. Team rosters will remain constant throughout the season, adding an element of continuity to the competition. For more on the AP WNBA coverage, visit https://apnews.com/hub/wnba-basketball.
