The UK has joined the US, Australia, and New Zealand in supporting Canada amidst the escalating tensions over the alleged involvement of Indian government agents in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader on Canadian soil. In response to the situation, the Foreign Office expressed its full confidence in Canada’s judicial system and called on India to cooperate in the investigations to help resolve the diplomatic standoff between the two nations.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently accused India’s high commissioner and other diplomats of being directly implicated in the 2023 assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This accusation led to a diplomatic fallout between India and Canada, with both countries expelling each other’s diplomats in a retaliatory manner, straining their bilateral relations.
Amidst the diplomatic tensions, the UK government released a statement affirming its support for Canada and calling for India’s cooperation with the legal process in Canada. The UK’s backing of Canada followed similar endorsements from the US, Australia, and New Zealand, all members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance.
The Five Eyes alliance, comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the US, aims to enhance security by sharing intelligence among its member countries. The US State Department has criticised India for not taking the allegations seriously and failing to cooperate with Canada’s investigations. The US Department of Justice initiated an investigation against an Indian government official for allegedly orchestrating a plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist leader in New York.
Australia and New Zealand have also expressed their concerns over the situation, with Australia respecting Canada’s judicial process and emphasising the importance of upholding sovereignty and the rule of law. New Zealand’s foreign minister highlighted the need for lawful and respectful treatment of all communities, especially in the face of serious allegations such as those surrounding the Sikh separatist leader’s assassination.
The strained relations between India and Canada stem from longstanding issues, including Canada’s accusations of Indian government proxies targeting Sikh citizens and India’s concerns over the Khalistan movement operating within Canada.
