Former President Donald Trump has downplayed the events of the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, referring to it as a “peaceful transfer of power.” During an interview on Tuesday, Trump made these comments while speaking with John Micklethwait, the editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News, at the Economic Club of Chicago. When asked about the importance of “respecting and encouraging” a peaceful transition in the future, Trump did not give a direct commitment to such a transition.
Reflecting on the day of the riot at the congressional complex, Trump described the scene in Washington as one of “love and peace,” stating that while hundreds of thousands gathered, only “some people went to the Capitol and a lot of strange things happened there.” Trump claimed he left on the morning he was supposed to depart, indicating that the transfer of power was peaceful. However, he mentioned that there were only 500 to 700 people at the Capitol during the riot, despite over 1,400 individuals being charged in connection to the attack according to the Department of Justice.
Contrary to Trump’s claims, the Department of Justice reported that around 140 police officers were assaulted during the riot. Additionally, Trump erroneously stated that Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter, was the sole fatality at the Capitol, overlooking the fact that she was one of five individuals who died in relation to the siege. Trump has faced indictments for his efforts to retain power after losing the 2020 election and has set the stage to contest the results, alleging “cheating” if he does not win in November.
Through public statements, social media posts on Truth Social, and a multitude of lawsuits, the former president is gearing up to dispute the election outcome should Vice President Kamala Harris emerge as the victor. Trump did not unequivocally commit to a peaceful transition of power and chose to downplay the severity of the 2021 Capitol riot during the interview.
