The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced the initiation of a new three-month review focused on safety at Boeing. The decision for this review comes in the wake of the agency’s increased scrutiny of the aerospace company, following an incident in which a panel detached from a jetliner during an Alaska Airlines flight earlier this year.
The FAA has clarified that the review aims to assess Boeing’s adherence to safety regulations and processes, specifically focusing on ensuring the timely and accurate provision of safety-related information for FAA use. This move is part of the FAA’s ongoing efforts to monitor the safety culture within Boeing, rather than being prompted by a specific event or concern.
In response to the FAA’s announcement, Boeing refrained from offering an immediate comment on the matter. FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker has previously taken steps to order special audits of Boeing, as well as other measures aimed at evaluating the safety culture within the company, following the panel detachment incident on the Alaska Airlines flight.
However, a recent report from the Transportation Department’s inspector general highlighted weaknesses in the FAA’s oversight capabilities, citing limitations in the agency’s ability to identify and address issues at Boeing. The report specifically pointed out shortcomings in ensuring that Boeing and its suppliers meet engineering and design requirements, as well as in investigating allegations of undue pressure on employees responsible for safety inspections at Boeing.
Notably, the National Transportation Safety Board issued an “urgent” recommendation to the FAA about a rudder issue affecting certain Boeing 737s in February, with the FAA subsequently releasing a safety alert to airlines regarding this matter. The FAA has been urged to address these concerns promptly to uphold safety standards.
