McConnell supported Jack Smith’s charges against Trump as he hoped ex-president would ‘pay a price’ for Jan. 6

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has expressed his support for the federal charges against former President Donald Trump in relation to the January 6 Capitol riot. McConnell reportedly stated that he hoped Trump would “pay a price” for the attack, as revealed in an upcoming biography.

Despite being critical of Trump for years, McConnell has publicly backed him while also supporting Special Counsel Jack Smith in 2023. McConnell’s endorsement of Smith’s charges against Trump came shortly after they were filed in August last year, with the Senate Minority Leader stating, “If he hasn’t committed indictable offenses, I don’t know what one is.”

The upcoming book titled “The Price of Power” sheds light on McConnell’s stance, indicating that he believed the federal charges against Trump had merit from the very beginning. McConnell is quoted as saying, “There’s no doubt who inspired it, and I just hope that he’ll have to pay a price for it,” in reference to the events of January 6.

The book also reveals that McConnell seriously considered voting to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial, which could have prevented the former president from seeking office again. McConnell expressed his views on the matter, stating, “I’m not at all conflicted about whether what the president did is an impeachable offense. I think it is.”

However, McConnell ultimately voted to acquit Trump, arguing that he could not be convicted as he had already left office. Despite this decision, McConnell acknowledged that former presidents are not immune from being held accountable through various legal avenues. In a statement following the acquittal, McConnell affirmed his support for Trump’s presidency and endorsed him for the 2024 election.

This latest development highlights the complex relationship between McConnell, Trump, and the events surrounding the Capitol riot. McConnell’s alignment with Special Counsel Jack Smith’s charges against Trump underscores his commitment to upholding accountability and the rule of law in the face of significant political challenges.
