East Kilbride charity promote wellbeing through inspiring mental health festival artwork

An East Kilbride charity is taking part in promoting mental health and wellbeing through an expressive arts project as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival. Agape Wellbeing’s Expressive Arts Group curated a striking exhibition showcasing their perspectives on the world. The project, under the theme of In/Visible, involves creating various artworks using nature and materials to make underserved community members feel seen, included, and valued.

The charity actively engages individuals with mental health challenges, including men’s and vulnerable women’s groups, in the artistic process. For over a decade, Agape has been fostering a safe environment in East Kilbride to encourage positive wellbeing. The exhibition, held at the charity’s base on Cornwall Way, aimed to boost participants’ confidence, sense of belonging, and mental wellness through creativity.

Drew McKinney, the manager at Agape, highlighted the significance of mental health in everyone’s lives, particularly for those participating in the arts festival. Engaging in a collaborative and creative journey allows participants to develop confidence, a sense of purpose, and a feeling of community. The festival, running until October 27, hosts over 30 events in Lanarkshire, including several in East Kilbride.

In conclusion, the involvement of individuals in artistic projects not only enhances their creative skills but also contributes significantly to their mental wellbeing. Agape’s initiative underscores the transformative power of art in fostering inclusivity, community spirit, and positive mental health outcomes for all participants. The Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival continues to be a platform for promoting mental health awareness, creativity, and holistic wellbeing in communities across Lanarkshire.
