Six men involved in a disturbing “human butchery” enterprise, led by mastermind Marius Gustavson, have been granted the opportunity to challenge the length of their sentences, according to a ruling by the Court of Appeal.
Gustavson and his accomplices were found guilty of conducting extreme body modifications such as male castration, penis removal, and other gruesome procedures on individuals as young as 16. The Old Bailey, where they were sentenced earlier this year, heard that the operations were filmed and shared on Gustavson’s pay-per-view website, Eunuch Maker, generating over £300,000 between 2017 and 2021.
Marius Gustavson, 46, from Haringey, North London, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years after pleading guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. The other five men – Janus Atkin, David Carruthers, Ashley Williams, Damien Byrnes, and Jacob Crimi-Appleby – were handed jail terms ranging from three years and eight months to 12 years for their involvement in the illicit operations.
During the recent Court of Appeal hearing, barristers representing the six defendants successfully argued for the permission to challenge the severity of their sentences. The judges acknowledged the unusual nature of the case but deemed the appeal as having merit.
The court proceedings earlier this year uncovered a macabre subculture where men sought to become “nullos” by undergoing extreme genital nullification procedures. Gustavson was directly linked to at least 29 such operations, some of which involved cannibalism, as revealed by evidence presented in court.
The defendants utilised various tools including clamps typically used for animal castration, with body parts being auctioned online. Gustavson even attempted to sell the severed penis of a victim for a significant sum of money, showcasing the depravity of their activities.
The sentencing judge had remarked that the operations conducted by Gustavson and his cohorts were executed in a hazardous and unprofessional manner, bordering on “human butchery”. The motivations behind the crimes were described as a mix of sexual gratification and financial gain.
The full appeal against the sentences is set to take place at a later date, as the legal process continues to unfold in this dark and disturbing case that has shocked many.
