Sweden to Award Blinken and Stoltenberg Knighthoods for NATO Role
In a historic move, Sweden is set to honour U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and former NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg with knighthoods for their significant contributions to Sweden’s accession to NATO, the world’s largest military alliance. The decision comes in the wake of a geopolitical shift in Europe following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
Alongside Blinken and Stoltenberg, former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin and former Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto will also be awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star. This prestigious honour is bestowed upon foreign citizens and stateless individuals who have made exceptional efforts towards Swedish interests.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed gratitude, stating, “The awards are an expression of our great gratitude for the efforts of these people in connection with Sweden’s membership in NATO.” Both Sweden and Finland joined the alliance nearly a year apart, marking the end of decades of post-World War II neutrality and centuries of non-alignment with major global powers.
The recognition of Blinken, Stoltenberg, and others underscores the pivotal role they played in facilitating Sweden’s decision to join NATO. This move not only reshapes Sweden’s security outlook but also underscores a broader realignment within Europe’s security landscape. The honour reflects Sweden’s appreciation for the individuals who have played a key role in this significant shift.
