Water companies are making a push for significant increases in bills that could reach up to 84% over the next five years, placing additional financial strain on customers. Companies such as Thames Water have put forward proposals to regulator Ofwat to raise tariffs in order to modernise their networks, following years of inadequate investment.
The proposed price hikes are also intended to cover the escalating energy costs associated with the intensive process of pumping water across the country and treating sewage. Among the companies seeking larger bill rises, Southern Water is aiming for an 84% increase from current prices, while Thames Water is requesting a 53% rise. On the other hand, Northumbrian Water has requested the smallest increase at 21% for the financial year of 2029-2030.
