The New York Police Department recently disclosed that during a 30-day period, they conducted 2,749 scans across 20 stations, resulting in 118 false positives at a rate of 4.29%. While the police continue to evaluate the outcomes of the trial, no formal agreements have been made with Evolv as yet. Mayor Adams has been a vocal supporter of the Massachusetts-based company, having previously installed their scanners in a city hospital and planned deployments in public schools.

Evolv itself has been under scrutiny in recent years due to legal issues, including investigations by the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Investors have also filed a lawsuit against the company, alleging misinformation about the scanners’ effectiveness in detecting weapons.

The Legal Aid Society criticised the pilot program, deeming it a failure and urging for its discontinuation in light of the revealed data and surrounding controversies.
