Little-known £3 Christmas item can ‘cut cholesterol’ and make crispy roast potatoes

A little-known £3 Christmas item has the potential to “cut cholesterol” and make roast potatoes crispy, according to experts. As the festive season approaches, many shoppers are prioritising items like potatoes, parsnips, and turkey for their holiday meals. However, Dr. Kevin Huffman, a bariatric physician and CEO of Ambari Nutrition, suggests that avocado oil could be a beneficial addition, especially for those concerned about their cholesterol levels.

Avocado oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, which have been linked to lowering “bad cholesterol” in the blood. Dr. Huffman highlights that incorporating avocado oil into dishes like mashed cauliflower instead of traditional mashed potatoes can offer a nutritious alternative. The health benefits of avocado oil have also been supported by researchers from China’s Hunan Agricultural University, who emphasised its positive impact on cholesterol levels due to its composition of fatty acids and phytosterols.

Available at various supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Morrisons for around £3, avocado oil is praised for its neutral taste and ability to give roast potatoes a crispy texture. Edward Mather from FuelHub recommends using avocado oil in moderation and swapping traditional stuffing for whole grain alternatives to boost fibre content and provide complex carbohydrates.

In addition to avocado oil, experts advise incorporating dark chocolate as a dip for fruits like strawberries and bananas as a healthier dessert option during the festive period. Yogurt and kefir, which contain probiotics beneficial for digestion, are also recommended additions to the shopping list to support gut health amidst increased holiday eating. Making mindful substitutions and additions to traditional Christmas dishes can help promote overall well-being during the holiday season.
