The study, published in the journal Neurology, involved 13,571 individuals over the age of 70 who were considered healthy, with no existing heart disease, dementia, serious physical disabilities, or health issues that could shorten their lifespan. Participants were monitored for an average of five years, during which some developed dementia and cognitive impairment. Cognitive tests were conducted regularly, assessing memory and thinking abilities.
Despite concerns about antibiotics disrupting the gut microbiome, important for overall health and cognitive function, the study found no significant differences in cognitive outcomes between those who had used antibiotics and those who had not. Factors such as family history of dementia and medication affecting cognition were taken into account, and no increased risks were associated with antibiotic use.
Further research is suggested by Prof Chan to explore the long-term effects of antibiotics on cognitive health. The study provides reassurance for older adults who are commonly prescribed antibiotics and at a higher risk for cognitive decline.
