Experts avoid disturbing earthquake monitoring equipment while removing disused weir from Dumfries and Galloway River

Experts undertake removal of disused weir from river in Dumfries and Galloway, ensuring no disturbance to earthquake monitoring equipment. The project at Davington Weir aims to enhance fish populations in the Davington Burn and White Esk rivers. The initiative, completed by the Water Environment Fund (WEF) team in Eskdalemuir, involved the Ayrshire Rivers Trust (ART) commissioned by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to carry out the weir removal before winter weather set in.

Julia MacPherson, SEPA’s river restoration specialist for WEF, expressed satisfaction with the positive impact of the Davington Weir removal project. She highlighted the creation of channels around the rock, facilitating fish movement to upstream habitats to support wild fish sustainability amid changing climates. The efficient completion of the project signified another successful year of WEF projects benefiting communities across Scotland, demonstrating a pioneering technique potentially applicable in future initiatives. The collaboration between SEPA, ART, a private landowner, and the British Geological Survey (BGS) ensured the successful removal of the weir without disrupting the nearby geophysical station used for monitoring earthquakes and magnetic fields.

Utilizing expanding grout for the first time in Scotland to dismantle the weir, the careful and meticulous approach adopted by ART proved effective in safeguarding the monitoring equipment and expediting the project. Struan Candlish, a fisheries biologist at ART, highlighted the significance of using demolition grout in barrier removals to enhance salmon, trout, and eel migration pathways, fostering river ecosystem restoration. Claire Brown, BGS Eskdalemuir site manager, commended the collaborative effort that contributed to the environmental improvement at Davington Burn.

The removal of the weir marks a positive stride towards fulfilling the ecological potential of the region. The project not only showcases innovative techniques in river restoration but also underscores the importance of preserving natural habitats and supporting biodiversity. Such initiatives serve as vital contributions to meeting environmental targets and enhancing the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems in Scotland.
