‘Put an end to painful bloating at Christmas’ with 10-minute rule

A top pharmacist is highlighting the risks of digestive discomfort during the festive season and providing advice on how to prevent it. Claire O’Connell, Boots Superintendent Pharmacist, warns that indulging in rich foods during Christmas can lead to bloating, heartburn, constipation, and other digestive issues. She recommends avoiding certain foods that can cause bloating, such as processed, sugary, or fatty foods, and high-fibre vegetables like cabbage and Brussels sprouts.

To alleviate bloating, Claire suggests consuming smaller portions, chewing slowly to avoid swallowing excess air, and engaging in light exercise like a 10-15 minute walk after meals. For heartburn, she advises limiting alcohol intake, avoiding trigger foods like chocolate and fatty foods, and refraining from eating close to bedtime. Wearing loose-fitting clothes and using over-the-counter remedies like antacids can also provide relief.

Constipation, a common condition during the holidays, can be eased by staying hydrated, consuming fibre-rich foods, and maintaining physical activity. If constipation persists, pharmacists can recommend appropriate treatments like laxatives. Claire also addresses Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), suggesting that managing stress, getting enough exercise and rest, and consulting with healthcare professionals for treatment guidance can help alleviate symptoms.

In summary, it’s important to be mindful of dietary choices and eating habits during the festive season to avoid digestive discomfort. By following Claire’s tips and seeking professional advice when needed, individuals can enjoy a healthier and more comfortable holiday experience.
