Speed cameras on A82 to reduce accidents along Loch Lomond shoreline are removed after three months

Temporary speed cameras that were installed on the A82 to reduce accidents along the Loch Lomond shoreline have been removed after a three-month period. The speed cameras were placed on the A82 between Luss and Tarbet in an effort to cut speeds and decrease the number of accidents in the area.

The decision to install the average speed cameras came after an uptick in speeds and injury collisions on the A82 route. These cameras were intended to be more effective at enforcing speed limits over a longer distance and deterring dangerous driving behaviours compared to the previous mobile enforcement methods used by Police Scotland Safety Cameras.

The cameras were operational from September to November, with a total of 131 offences recorded during this period. Shockingly, some vehicles were caught travelling as fast as 108mph along the route. Despite the high number of offences detected, injury collisions on the road decreased while the cameras were in place compared to previous years.

In the three years leading up to the installation of the cameras, there were nine injury collisions recorded on that stretch of road between August and November. Five of these collisions resulted in serious injuries and one was fatal. However, during the three months that the cameras were active, there were no injury collisions reported.

Alan Bowater, West Safety Camera Area Manager, emphasised the importance of adhering to speed limits for the safety of all road users. He highlighted that driving above the speed limit can have severe consequences and urged drivers to comply with speed regulations, whether through local policing or the use of safety cameras.

In conclusion, the temporary speed cameras along the A82 have played a significant role in improving road safety and reducing accidents in the area. The data collected during the enforcement period shows a positive impact on curbing speeding and enhancing overall road safety measures. It is essential for drivers to be vigilant and comply with speed limits to ensure the safety of everyone on the roads.
