School lunch anger as concerned mum hits out after son was losing weight

A mother, Kay Webb, raised concerns about school lunches after her son experienced weight loss, sparking outrage among parents. She shared images on Facebook showing meagre portions served to primary school pupils, prompting a call for action regarding the quality and quantity of meals provided. Webb’s seven-year-old son, William, was found losing weight and coming home hungry every night, leading her to question the adequacy of the school lunches. She highlighted that children as young as four were receiving portions comparable to those for 10- and 11-year-olds, emphasising that for some, this might be their only meal of the day.

Webb’s personal experience of childhood neglect and hunger has motivated her to advocate for sufficient and nutritious meals for all children. She disclosed that William, who has sensory issues, struggles with certain textures and dislikes many vegetables. Webb emphasized the importance of hot, filling meals for children, particularly during the winter months. Following her public outcry, the school responded by defending the meals served, stating that children have the option of additional vegetables, coleslaw, salad, and bread to supplement their plates.

Despite the school’s explanation, Webb and other parents criticized the portion sizes as inadequate, expressing disbelief at the quality of the meals provided. Webb’s advocacy for improved school lunches has garnered support from the community, with many echoing her concerns over the standard of food offered to children. As a result of the public outcry, the school has arranged for William to have a packed lunch during lunch breaks. Webb’s campaign for better school meals underscores the significance of addressing nutritional needs and ensuring that all children have access to sufficient and nourishing food during their school day.
