Police probe suspected brothels in Arbroath after councillors raise concerns

**Police Investigate Allegations of Illegal Brothels in Arbroath Amid Community Concerns**

The police are currently conducting an investigation into allegations of illegal brothels operating within several properties in Arbroath, following significant concerns raised by local councillors. Councillors Jack Cruickshanks and Derek Wann reported an uptick in complaints from residents regarding suspected prostitution activities within the town.

On Monday, November 2, Police Scotland confirmed that they had received reports concerning a limited number of properties and are actively looking into the allegations. Councillor Cruickshanks expressed his commitment to addressing the issue, stating, “If illegal brothels are operating in Arbroath, I want them shut down, and those responsible brought to justice.” He emphasised the importance of reassurance for residents who have expressed serious concerns over the matter and affirmed that all allegations would be thoroughly investigated.

Violence, exploitation, and human trafficking are critical concerns linked to such establishments. Councillor Cruickshanks highlighted that he would pursue investigations into any evidence of these severe crimes. He stated, “The law is clear, and where criminal activity is established, it must be enforced. There can be no place for exploitation in our communities.”

Councillor Derek Wann, who serves as the Depute Leader of Angus Council, revealed that he had provided Police Scotland with intelligence gathered from constituents about the suspected brothels. Under Scottish law, specifically the Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995, it is a criminal offence to keep or manage a brothel, or to knowingly allow premises to be used for such purposes. If found guilty, individuals face a maximum penalty of seven years in prison, an unlimited fine, or potentially both.

Inspector Mahboob Ahmad mentioned in a statement that the police are prioritising this investigation and maintaining communication with the concerned individuals to gather further information.

The allegations and subsequent investigation have raised significant dialogue within the town, reflecting community anxieties over public safety and the enforcement of laws surrounding prostitution and human trafficking. As police efforts continue, many residents hope for clarity and effective action to address the situation, reinforcing the message that exploitation will not be tolerated in Arbroath.

In summary, the ongoing inquiry into suspected brothels highlights not only the community’s concerns but also the crucial role of local governance and law enforcement in upholding justice and protecting vulnerable individuals. The matter serves as a reminder of the broader implications of such illegal activities and the collective responsibility to ensure safety and integrity within communities.
