Wetherspoons to open 25 more pubs next year with one Scottish opening confirmed

**Wetherspoons Announces Expansion Plans with 25 New Pubs Set to Open Next Year**

In a significant expansion move, JD Wetherspoons has revealed plans to inaugurate 25 additional pubs throughout the UK next year, further broadening the opportunities for patrons to enjoy affordable dining options. This announcement comes on the heels of the chain’s promising sales figures, which indicate a notable increase in first-quarter performance.

The strategy for the upcoming year includes the establishment of between five to ten new managed pubs from January to August, alongside an expansion of its existing franchised locations by an estimated ten to fifteen sites. Currently, the pub chain operates a robust portfolio of 797 locations, and this expansion signals Wetherspoons’ commitment to bolstering its footprint in the hospitality sector.

Among the anticipated openings, one venue has already been confirmed: The William Chambers is scheduled to launch on Chambers Street in Edinburgh. Initially slated to open on November 3, this debut has been delayed by three months, with January 26 now marking the new opening date.

This expansion follows the successful introduction of six new managed pubs in the current financial year, with locations including Crewe in Cheshire, Ferndown in Dorset, Dibden Purlieu in Hampshire, and Kempston in Bedfordshire. Notably, Wetherspoons has also established pubs at major UK airports, such as Manchester and Heathrow, enhancing customer access to its offerings.

The company’s sales performance has reflected a robust growth trajectory, with an impressive 8.2 per cent increase in like-for-like sales during the 14 weeks leading to November 1. Bar sales exhibited particular strength, surging 9.4 per cent, while food sales followed with a more modest increase of 6.8 per cent. However, this growth trend has shown signs of tapering; sales growth experienced a slight decrease from 8.6 per cent to 7.5 per cent over recent weeks.

Chairman Tim Martin expressed optimism regarding the company’s first-quarter results, noting that while the financial year has begun promisingly, the forecast for profits, anticipated at £76.4 million over a 53-week period, will largely depend on sustained sales growth.

Despite facing challenges that have seen pre-tax profits decrease to £58.6 million for the year ending July 26 due to rising operational costs, Wetherspoons remains resilient and confident about its ongoing expansion and profitability.

In summary, Wetherspoons’ upcoming expansion is not merely a response to recent sales successes but a strategic move to solidify its presence across the UK. This initiative could potentially redefine the experience of high-street dining, making it increasingly accessible to a broader audience in 2027 and beyond.
