Ayr’s commitment to fostering intergenerational relationships has been recognised with a prestigious accolade at the Intergenerational Excellence Awards 2026. The collaborative effort between Ayr Grammar Early Years Centre and Windyhall Care Home clinched the esteemed Changing the Story of Age Award in the Tackling Ageism category during the event held at Citation in Glasgow, part of the Global Intergenerational Congress.

These awards, organised by the charity Generations Working Together, celebrate initiatives that enrich lives through the connections between different generations. Since their inception in 2017, the awards have acknowledged numerous impactful projects, both at home and abroad. This year’s ceremony featured 13 finalists who showcased innovative approaches to combat age-related stereotypes, particularly highlighting the importance of challenging misconceptions surrounding aging.

For the last two years, children from Ayr Grammar Early Years Centre have forged meaningful bonds with residents of Windyhall Care Home. Their regular weekly interactions included storytelling sessions, musical activities, arts and crafts, and engaging games. Such activities have not only cultivated friendships but also addressed social isolation amongst the elderly, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect. The children involved have also shown remarkable growth in confidence and community engagement as a result of these interactions.

Natalie Fallan, Early Years Practitioner at Ayr Grammar Early Years Centre and lead practitioner for the award, expressed her delight at the recognition. “I am thrilled that our efforts to unite children with older residents have been acknowledged,” she remarked. “Witnessing the friendships blossom over the past two years has been heartwarming, and this award is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved in this initiative.”

Jane Harkness, the Activity Coordinator at Windyhall Care Home, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the deep connection formed between the nursery children and the care home residents. “These visits were incredibly uplifting for our residents. It truly felt like one big happy family,” she added.

The success of this intergenerational partnership highlights the profound impact that such initiatives can have on both young and old alike, fostering a spirit of togetherness and understanding in a world where ageism can often prevail.

**Summary:**
The collaboration between Ayr Grammar Early Years Centre and Windyhall Care Home demonstrates the power of intergenerational friendships. Recognising their efforts through the Changing the Story of Age Award is not only a celebration of their past achievements but a beacon of hope for future initiatives aimed at fostering community, respect, and understanding across generations.
