The tragic events unfolded just after 3am when Coleman’s vehicle mounted a kerb, collided with a road sign, and ultimately flipped over. Emergency services were quick to respond and discovered the two men trapped inside the wreckage. Both had sustained catastrophic injuries and were pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
An inquest into the tragic deaths was conducted at County Hall in Haverfordwest, where various pieces of evidence were presented. A passing motorist who witnessed the aftermath described the eerie sight of the overturned vehicle with its two occupants completely silent inside. The witness promptly called for emergency assistance. Upon arrival, paramedics found a bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey lying on the floor of the vehicle, and officers noted a distinct smell of alcohol permeating the interior.
A forensic investigator reported that the Polo had travelled nearly 100 metres from the point of impact before coming to a stop. While the exact speed at which it was travelling could not be established, it was implied that excessive speed was a contributing factor to the crash. Toxicology tests revealed Coleman’s blood alcohol concentration to be 131mg per 100ml—significantly above the legal limit of 80mg.
CCTV footage captured the two young men entering the vehicle mere minutes before the fatal incident, and it was noted that neither was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The senior coroner for Pembrokeshire, Gareth Lewis, concluded that Coleman died from traumatic head injuries, with alcohol and speed as contributing factors, whereas Bowen died from multiple traumatic injuries.
Family members of both victims shared heartfelt tributes, remembering Aled Bowen as a cherished son and brother, whose laughter and spirit would always be remembered. Similarly, Coleman’s family lamented the loss of a caring and kind individual whose presence would be profoundly missed.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with drink-driving, leaving families devastated and the community in mourning. As we reflect on this loss, it is imperative to promote safer driving habits and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
